The setting: Strangereal, ten years after the Lighthouse War
ACE COMBAT 8 returns to Strangereal, the fictional world of the series’ classic era — the same planet whose wars shaped Ace Combat 04, 5, Zero and 7. The clock reads 2029, ten years after the Lighthouse War of Ace Combat 7, and the peace held by the rebuilt Usea continent is about to break.
The aggressor is the Republic of Sotoa, invading across the continent of Usea against the Federation of Central Usea (FCU). The war opens with a weapon that no air force can duel: the Tonitrus Spears, kinetic bombardment platforms in orbit that strike ground targets from space. Screenshots of the campaign’s opening show exactly that asymmetric shape — drone swarms over snow-covered cities, radar towers burning, ground forces crushed by something overhead (“That thing’s crushing our tanks!”, a wingman radios).
Your squadron: Joker Flight from the FCU Endurance
You fight from the sea. Your home is the FCU Endurance, a carrier shown as a waypoint on the mission HUD, and your unit is Joker Flight — you, three wingmen, and a call-sign ladder that grows as the war does.
The campaign’s premise gives you an unusual role: you are not the pilot, you are the weapon systems officer — the silent second seat. Your pilot is Jan “Rex” Cope, the man wartime propaganda branded the “Wings of Theve”, a legend in the mold of manufactured hero stories. When Cope is killed in action, you assume his identity, his call sign and his legend, and keep flying the war he became famous in. The full cast — Tasha Severskaya, “Noise” Coster, “Professor” Baxter and the rest — is profiled in the story and characters guide.

How missions look so far
Official screenshots and the store listing sketch the mission variety:
- Defense over cities: swarm drones over a snow-covered city while ground battles rage below.
- Mountain interdiction: strikes against SU-25SM attackers and radar towers across snow valleys, using dispersed special weapon attacks.
- Superweapon sieges: a giant airborne vessel with destructible sub-targets — SUB PROPELLER segments — attacked in strafing runs.
- Ace encounters: the black interceptors of the 55th Unit, Lux Lunae, introduced with their own squadron card.
Project ACES describes dynamic multi-layered cloudscapes built on the new Cloudly technology — clouds you fly through, with contrails and engine smoke that have tactical meaning — and first-person cinematic scenes between the flying. Mission-by-mission walkthroughs will be added here after launch testing; the beginner guide covers the systems those missions use.
What the campaign asks of you
Two through-lines are visible in official material. First, command pressure and consequences: the store text promises “the pressure of command, the weight of decisions, and the bonds forged in battle,” and coverage indicates your choices affect whether NPC pilots survive, without derailing the plot. Second, the legend you wear: flying as the borrowed Wings of Theve means every mission is performed in another man’s name — the campaign’s emotional engine, and the reason the title names a myth rather than a war.
Editions, timing and where to start
The campaign launches October 1-2, 2026 ($69.99 Standard, $89.99 Deluxe with three days of early access). Your aircraft choices matter from mission one — the best starting aircraft guide and the aircraft list prepare the hangar side of the war.
